This mountain town was founded in the 10th century by Raja Sahil Varman. The earlier name of this place was Champa as dedicated to the daughter of Raja Sahil Varman, who builds a temple in the middle of this mountain town. Later the name was changed to Chamba. The temple still stands in the same place where it was build and the local people worship Goddess Champa as their native God. Chamba is situated in the western Himalayas. The town is setup on top of a plateau on the right banks of the river Ravi valley.
